New baby
Mum and baby pictured together, apparently with nothing on !
In reality, mum is wearing a 'strappy top' (boob tube or similar) the straps simply folded under her arms and baby, still wearing her nappy is held in such a way as to appear nude.
(the nappy is kept on for sake of decorum as well as to retain undesirable waste products !, I wont photograph babies totally nude, simply because in todays politically correct climate, I think that's the safest stance !).
Mums confident and protective smile and baby's concerned stare seem to tell a story as old as time.

Same lady, same baby, a couple of months further down the road. We find that a christening dress might become part of the story !
I did complete some pretty traditional images at this stage too - pictures that grandma might like.
The picture on the left might be a bit radical for most people, although I like it and think that the symmetry and almost monochrome colouring in the picture are quite effective - I realise that this picture may not be to everyones taste.
It could look quite effective in black and white or sepia.
Perhaps the image is more of a document than anything else.
By the term, document - I mean a marker in time, a record of the way things are - an image to show us for posterity as we really are.

The complete family.
I think that the christening dress, being the point of highest contrast in the image immediately draws attention to the baby in the centre.
The intense blue of the little girls dress in the foreground lifts the image and gives a welcome splash of colour.
The expression on her face says it all !
See if you can crack the coded message in the four pictures below.
Big hint - she's dancing ! it's a musical thing - so it's a song title . . . . . . . . . . . . The pose wasn't my idea - I claim no originality on this one
The idea belonged to the little girl, the pictures ended up framed in a sequence as a christmas present for her father - who then had to work out what they meant !
A lot of my ideas come from my clients . . .

So, does a portrait have to show a face ?
what are the rules ?
who wrote the rules ?
My art teacher used to tell me to learn the rules - then break them.
OK. - images like this are not what most people are looking for,
but without variety - how can you say you had a choice ?

another theme I'm exploring
I attach people to the ceiling with glue so that they hang downwards like bats.
(araldite seems to work - difficult to get them off the ceiling afterwards though)
this lady came in to obtain a picture for her boyfriend who was departing for foreign shores (New Zealand) - she wanted to give him some portraits so that he wouldn't forget her.
We got some good shots - this is one of about a hundred that I took in the one hour session.
I hope that he appreciates all of our efforts.
I havent finished with this theme and I'm still looking for people mad enough to let me explore it further.
