life reaches out to touch life,

a baby's hand holds onto another, caring hand.

you don't have to show everything in a portrait,

sometimes a detail is all that it takes,

it's like the difference between a poem and a novel,
a poem contains less words,
but may contain a deep meaning.

baby portraits

this little one is almost newborn, just a few days old.

I often get asked
how old should my baby be
for the first portrait ?

The simple answer is
it depends on what sort of portrait
you'd like.

a newborn,
small and helpless.
receives a kiss from mother.

what more could you ask for

a picture of tenderness

the baby's hand,
clutching mothers shoulder says it all.

so how soon should you have portrait of the new baby ??

baby on the way

this picture was lit very carefully,
showing the bump but nothing else,

what mum isn't proud of 'the bump' !

described by an Tudor author
as 'as fine a sight as a ship in full sail'

such a description doesn't really
make sense until you see the
billowing rounded curve
in a picture like this one.

(and just in case anyone thinks that
this picture is rude - it isn't).

the lady came to the studio
and explained that she'd like this sort of picture.

It was done in such a tasteful manner
that nothing 'rude' is showing..

I'm sure that it couldn't offend anyone.

The baby from the bump in the picture above.

I find it odd that babies all look so very old when they're so young,

(I know that this fact is often commented on - but it still amazes me) !

This little character is the son of a girl who first came to the studio for some pictures when she was a teenager. Years later - she brought this little fellow for a portrait.

It's really nice to see people return to the studio again and again over the years.

I think that it's a privilege to see someone grow and develop in this way.

and I take it as a huge compliment that this lady, whom I first met as a girl, chose to bring her baby to my studio for her portraits.

she could easily have gone to any of the other studios in the county,

thank you Angelina.,

little one makes eye contact with mum,

and reaches out, pointing . . .

I think it's pretty clear that
mum is a very happy lady indeed.

and as they grow,

their little characters are revealed.

they give so much happiness
with a simple little smile.
